1C0NIC Singapore Architecture

Whenever you hear Singapore, the first image that pops into mind is... the Merlion. But do you know that there are a lot of buildings you might consider visiting whenever you tour "The Little Red Dot"? Here are 1c0nic Singapore Architecture and some nuggets about them.

1. Marina Bay Sands by Moshe Safdie

Located at Bayfront Avenue is a three towered hotel owned by Las Vegas Sands. The 2,500 hotels and suites include casino, ArtScience Museum and EXPO and Convention Centre. It was completed in 2010 by Ssangyeong Engineering and Construction. In 2019, Safdie Architects revealed it's plans to extend the hotel by adding a fourth tower.


2. Reflections at Keppel Bay by Daniel Libeskind

Completed in 2011 is 6- distinctive curved glass towers composed of 1129 units. It is located in Keppel Bay View with neighboring condominiums Caribbean and Corals. The Polish-American architect is also known for creating World Trade Center Memorial master plan.


3. The Hive by Thomas Alexander Heatherwick

Also known as the Learning Hub of Nanyang Technological University, it is designed by an English designer and founder of London-based design practice Heatherwick Studio. Colloquially known as "Dim sum Basket Building", it consists of 12 eight-story towers arranged around a public atrium. It is completed in 2015.


4. Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay by DP Architects

The performing arts center is located in Esplanade Drive. It consists of two rounded space frames fitted with triangulated glass elements and sunshades which balance outward views with solar shading. Colloquially known to locals as "The Big Durians", it is completed in 2001.


5. The Interlace by Ole Scheeren and The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)

Awarded the World Building of the Year in 2015 World Architecture Festival it consists of 31 residential blocks. This Jenga-looking structures are irregularly stacked upon each other. The hexagonal arrangements provides almost every home with a wide view of the surrounding areas.

6. The Jewel at Changi by Moshe Safdie

A nature-themed entertainment and retail complex located at Changi Airport. It links into three passenger terminals with centerpiece 'the Rain Vortex', which is the world's tallest indoor waterfall. It is completed in 2019.


7. ParkRoyal Collection Pickering by WOHA The "Hotel in a Garden" theme designed by Singaporean architecture firm is located in Upper Pickering Street. The Contemporary Modern and Organic Architectural Style is lauded with design of elevated terraced garden features.


8. Marina One Residences by Christoph Ingenhoven

The German architect designed Integrated development consists of 2 residential and 2 office towers and a podium called 'The Heart'. The Neofuturistic mixed-use building is completed in 2018 by Korean consortium Hyundai and GS Engineering & Construction.


9. d'Leedon by Zaha Hadid

The integrated development consists of 7 residential towers 12 semi-detached villas, recreational facilities and landscaping. It was completed in 2016 prior to the architect's death.


10. ParkView Square by DP Architects and James Adams Design

Locally referred to as "The Gotham Building" because of its classical Art Deco feature. It is one of the most expensive buildings in Singapore completed in 2002. It houses consulates and embassies and is situated at North Bridge Road.
